4 Chic Spas in Gran Canaria

When? April 2015
Why? I was invited out to Gran Canaria to do a review of the island’s best spas
With? I invited my gorgeous sister, Tuhina along with me to enjoy a much needed relaxing spa weekend
I must admit, Gran Canaria isn’t the first destination that springs to mind when talking about spas. Which is why, when Gran Canaria Wellness invited me to visit the top spa’s on the island, I decided to investigate.
Gran Canaria is the third largest of the seven Canary Islands, situated off the north western coast of Africa, in the Atlantic Ocean. It’s sunny and warm all year round and a great place to visit for a quick weekend sojourn (it’s only a 4 hour flight from London).
The landscape is volcanic with vast desert areas, filled with the most spectacular sand dune backdrops. Interspersed amidst this arid environment, are small chic, beachside towns and resorts, such as quaint Puerto de Mogan (below) and Meloneras.
Top 4 chic spas Gran Canaria
My sister, Tuhina and I stayed at the luxury 5 star hotel, the Sheraton Gran Canaria Salobre Golf and Spa Resort, situated on top of a deep valley, with breath taking vistas. It’s a design hotel in every sense, from the modern, geometric architecture and huge art works, to walkways and communal areas, positioned specifically so that the most spectacular views are framed by the building. The interiors throughout the hotel are stone, wood and metal, which gives a natural, homely feel, in spite of the minimal aesthetic. It’s a large resort but feels intimate and relaxed due to the intelligent design. The hotel is a modernist dream and beautiful from every vantage point. I loved it.
Sheraton Gran Cana
There are several swimming pools at the hotel, my favourite was the infinity pool at the summit of the resort (above). It was a fantastic sun trap, as well a perfect backdrop for a photo shoot, which is why I decided to take advantage of it. Click here to see my ‘What to wear when you’re there’ sportswear and spa shoot.

It was a four-day trip with a visit to a different spa every day. Here’s a run down of my favourite spas on the island.
Spa 1
Minimal, modern spa with spectacular infinity pool and breath taking views. Using one of the islands most famous natural resources, the spa at the Sheraton Salobre is named after the plant extract, Aloe Vera. Gran Canaria Aloe is said to be the world’s purest form of Aloe. The treatments incorporate and harness the plants special healing and analgesic properties. I had the signature, Aloe Massage, before using the fantastic spa circuit and going for a dip in the stunning infinity pool. Sheer indulgence and a blissful afternoon.

Spa 2
Colourful Spanish style garden retreat and spa. Set amidst idyllic, flower scented gardens with a stunning mountain back drop, The Inagua Spa is the perfect setting in which to completely relax and unwind. The hotels design and décor inspired by traditional Spanish bodega style, coupled with the outdoor jacuzzi and pools, helps to set the scene for a nurturing and calming wellness experience. My sister and I tried the Cordial anti-stress massage, it was a wonderful hour long massage, the perfect way to forget about the stress of day to day life.

The traditional hamam style spa. Explore the Finnish sauna, steam hamams, salt caves or Thalasso pool, at this wonderfully luxurious spa, beautifully decorated in a traditional Moorish style. As well as all the facilities already on offer in the spa take advantage of  the open-air fitness suite, with views over the pool and a personal trainer on hand, should you need a little extra encouragement. The treatments on offer are sheer indulgence, from Cleopatra caviar wraps to Rasul baths, all using Natura Bisse products. I highly recommend the Pantai Luar massage using herb filled, heated poultices to give you the ultimate, indulgent experience!

Spa 4
Seaside Palm Beach (pictured above)
The retro, rain forrest inspired spa. Taking influence from artists Miro, Picasso and other Spanish masters, the whole of the resort has a 60’s, retro theme in its décor and design. The spa treatment rooms look out onto individual flower and cactus filled gardens, you’d be excused for thinking you were in the middle of the Amazon. I loved the outdoor sauna and relaxation areas. Getting ready after my treatment in the beautiful outdoors (private area) was a wonderfully calming experience. We had the hot stone therapy using volcanic rocks from the island, the heat really adds to the sensation of warmth and the feeling of being utterly pampered. It was a fantastic experience.

Toronto – City Guide

Thompson Hotel Toronto

The pool at The Thompson Toronto by night
I was lucky enough to be invited out to Toronto last week to sample some of the culture and highlights of the Canadian city.  I’ve tried to condense my 5 day trip into a mini guide, incorporating the best bars, clubs, shops, sights and where to stay in Toronto.
Graffiti
Toronto – 36 Hours Itinerary
Day 1:  Start the morning off with a spot of underground culture on the fascinating Graffiti Tour. Renowned graffiti artist Kit was our guide, he walks you through the urban gallery of Downtown Toronto and helps you to discover the city’s alternative art scene.
For lunch take in panoramic views of the city and indulge in the seasonal, locally sourced delights at Restaurant 360 at The CN Tower. If you’re a bit of an adrenaline junkie,  you could even try the edge walk, 356 metres above the ground! Maybe before you eat though!
After lunch head over to the pretty, colourful streets of Kensington Market. Browse for treasures in the myriad vintage stores and stop off for afternoon coffee, whilst hanging out with the trendy locals and hipsters. If vintage isn’t your lot and you fancy a serious spot of retail therapy, head over to the commercial shopping district of Yorkville.
Get spruced up for dinner and head out for a night on the town, see After Dark section below.
Day 2: Take in the breathtaking site of one of the most beautiful natural wonders of the world, Niagara Falls. In under an hour and a half you can be transported to the Canadian side of the falls, where you can take a helicopter ride for a spectacular aerial view or sail into the spray on a steamer boat. Be prepared to get wet! It’s a truly epic sight and totally worth the trip.

Cat's Meaow Vintage Boutique

If you want to splurge on vintage Chanel and Balenciaga pieces, there are some great vintage shops in Toronto. Check out Cat’s Meow pictured above or Divine Decadence Boutique in Yorkville. Kensington Market also has some great retro stores with affordable vintage finds.
Nuit Blanche

For 1 night of the year, all of Toronto’s streets are closed off and the city is invited to immerse itself in an interactive art festival. Streets and buildings are taken over by the art world and filled with pop up exhibitions and installations for everyone to enjoy. This one was called The Tank. (Can’t imagine why!) Nuit Blanche takes place on the first week of October every year.

After Dark – Eating
There’s a buzzing culinary and night life scene in Toronto. For dinner head to seductive Chinese restaurant Luckee, pictured above. Listen to chilled house music, sip specialist sake and dine out on steamed dim sum. It’s delicious!
For a chic older clientele, dimmed surroundings with huge art works on display and an excellent gin selection, try Nota Bene, which has been voted one of Canada’s best new restaurants.

Drinks and Clubbing
From private members bars, rooftop cocktails, international DJs to underground speakeasies, whatever your party scene Toronto has it covered.
UK private members club Soho House recently opened it’s exclusive doors in Toronto. Inviting in international celebrities and a cool creative crowd, Soho House Toronto is the place to be. You must try the signature espresso martinis on the fairy lit rooftop terrace, be warned though, they are strong!
Many of the best bars and clubs in Toronto are in the hotels, such as the sky high, cocktail bar at the Thompson Hotel, drinks by the pool anyone?? Renowned for a legendary party or two, boutique hotel, The Drake is also big news on the clubbing scene at the moment, specifically the basement club, Underground. Check listings before you go.
We also tried out Cube Club, which is fun, head here in the summer months when the rooftop is open and international DJ’s spin their tunes in the main room.

What to wear when you’re there
Toronto is the commercial capital of Canada, as well as its most ethnically diverse city. So the sartorial style of this vibrant hub is a real melting pot of cultures and trends.  The laid back attitude of the Torontonians is mirrored in their relaxed, casual fashion sense. When packing chose pieces that you’d wear in any metropolitan city, the weather is changeable and goes to the extremes, so think about comfort and bring layers.
The style tribes here vary from city suits and grown up glamour in the shopping district of Yorkville, to a more chilled out, hipster vibe and retro looks in quirky Kensington Market. Here’s TheStyleTraveller edit of the best dressed people I bumped into on my Toronto adventure.

Shinta Mani – The Most Stylish Luxury Hotel in Cambodia

Where?  Cambodia.
Exactly? Shinta Mani Hotel, Siem Reap, about a 15 minute Tuk Tuk ride from the famous Angkor Wat Unesco World Heritage Site.
When? December 2017
Best time to go? November to March is peak season with the most temperate weather, but if you’d prefer it to be a bit quieter, then May to early October is the best time for you.

After a hectic year of travel I decided to see in the New Year by ticking off one of my bucket list destinations. I’ve always been in awe of the magnificent Angkor Wat Temple in Cambodia. So when the stunning, luxury design hotel Shinta Mani in Siem Reap invited me to stay I couldn’t believe my luck.
The Shinta Mani group consists of three hotels, the luxury hotel Shinta Mani Angkor, boutique property Shinta Mani Shack and the brand new, spectacular private pool villas at Shinta Mani Angkor-Bensley Collection, complete with your own Bensley Butler.
The hotel was originally built in 2003 and underwent a huge renovation in 2012 by world renowned creative director and architect Bill Bensley. With the new addition of the private pool villas, Shinta Mani is now one of Cambodias premier hotel destinations inviting elite guests from all over the globe.
Situated just a 15 minute tuk tuk ride from Ankgor Wat, the Shinta Mani Hotel includes two excellent restaurants serving international and Cambodian dishes, two swimming pools and a divine spa.

Every inch of Shinta Mani is an instagram dream. From the Cambodian-meets-modern architecture, the whitewashed entrances inspired by the local historical site, spacious outdoor communal and reception areas with marble floors, Lombok style furnishings and serene water features, the hotel’s feng shui is completely aligned to make you feel 100% at ease, so you can relax into your holiday effortlessly.

The majestic reception rooms are filled with eclectic and ornate statues and artwork. Each space makes you want to stop and take in the beauty, which is probably why there are so many seating areas.

The Rooms
There are several different catergories of room but all are spacious, elegantly decorated and super stylish. So lets skip straight to the highest category shall we? The Angkor-Bensley collection is a group of 10 private pool villas each with there own sky garden sun deck, private entry courtyard where the private pool is located, leading on to a spectacularly designed bedroom, walk-in-wardrobe, kitchenette and bathroom with wet room, including an al fresco bathtub in the back garden. They are utterly fabulous!

Food and Drink
The food offering in Siem Reap in general is excellent. You can head into town in a hotel tuk tuk and explore the Old Market area which is filled with shops, bars and restaurants. The hotel owns a bar/restaurant in town called Soul Kitchen which is super chilled and offers yummy comfort food.
Back the hotel you can pick from two different restaurants Kroya and The Elephant Polo Club or head to the lovely Bensley Bar for a Mai Thai with a rooftop view.
My favourite place for breakfast was the buffet at Kroya, with fruit and juice station pictured above. In the evening Kroys transforms into one of Siem Reaps best and most prestigious restaurants.

A Taste Explosion

We sampled the five course tasting menu at Kroya (for research purposes only of course!) and it was a fabulous culinary journey through Cambodia with a modern twist. The experimental (and delicious) dishes are designed by the celebrated Kroya chefs.

What to do in the day
Angkor Wat of course. A short 15 minute tuk tuk ride from the hotel is the worlds largest religious monument, 1.6 million square metres of land filled with ancient intricately carved Hindu / Buddhist temples creating a magical temple city surrounded by a moat.
The two main temples to visit are Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom if you’re short on time. But you can buy a 3 or 5 day pass and discover new areas, temples and stunning views at a languid pace. The temple of Ta Prohm was also made famous because scenes from Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, the movie featuring Angelie Jolie were shot here.

The Shinta Mani Foundation – The charity you should know about

Where? The Shinta Mani Foundation, Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Exactly? I was very lucky to be invited to stay at the Shinta Mani Hotel in Siem Reap, over Christmas and during my stay they invited me to visit the Shinta Mani Foundation for the morning.
The Foundation? A Cambodian NGO, the Shinta Mani Foundation is dedicated to supporting local communities by providing vital services, developing schemes to increase human capital, and equipping them with the tools to overcome the constraints of poverty.
When?  December 2017
Shinta Mani Foundation Bicycles for children to get to school

The Shinta Mani Foundation Charity

The charities main purpose is to ‘Improve the lives of Cambodians by providing opportunities to overcome poverty.’ They have provided the local villagers with jobs in the hotel, from front house to culinary, giving them the opportunity to bring home a salary to support their families. The Shinta Mani Foundation also provides transport for the locals, such as bicycles so that the children can get to school to be educated.
Most recently the Foundation – funded in part by revenue from Shinta Mani hotels together with donations – partnered with Global Dental Relief to bring a group of 16 dentists and volunteers to Shinta Mani Shack, in order to conduct free dental check-ups at local schools for underprivileged students.

building wells in cambodia
It was a very interesting, emotional and enlightening experience for me. The charity works with a lot of the local villages and I had the chance to go to one of them and be part of a day there. I met lots of the women, men and children living in poverty, that the foundation helps and I also helped out with some of their daily activities. Well sort of. Photo above is of one of the much need drinking water wells new to the village.
It was amazing to be able to see first hand, exactly what the charity has achieved since it opened its doors in 2004, and how many lives they have changed.

The Shinta Mani Foundation building wells
On top of this the foundation has built new wells and taught the villagers how to do so themselves, in order for hundreds of families to be able to drink clean water. Building a well provides for one village, but teaching the individual how to build the well themselves and providing them with the materials, means that they can use this new skill to create a sustainable job for themselves, as well as building new wells for nearby and surrounding villages.

A women who was helped by the Shinta Mani Foundation making a rattan mat

They have also taught the older generation women how to make useful home items such as rattan matts so that they can go on to sell them as another form of income.
I also learnt the charity supplies free health care and education, funded by the generous donations through the hotel and 100% of these proceeds go directly to the charity too!
The image below shows one of the new brick homes they have built in the village.

Projects such as this are carried out alongside the Shinta Mani Foundation’s ongoing, fundamental work, which centres around the Shinta Mani School of Hospitality. The Hospitality school takes in a carefully chosen group of underprivileged locals yearly and provides them with the knowledge, skills and ‘on the job’ experience, enabling them to gain a job in Siem Reap’s booming hospitality sector. These are opportunities which would have never been available to the individuals if it weren’t for the Foundation.

Shinta Mani Foundation Children
As things stand the Shinta Mani Foundation success shows 1,400 water wells built, 99 homes constructed, 229 graduates from the school of hospitality who are now employed in the local tourism industry, 641 bicycles donated, 8123 health checkups and 59 micro business loans, as provided to Channary pictured below who set up her first small local shop.

The Hotel
Housed in the historic mansion of the former French Colonial Governor of Siem Reap, the splendid FFC Angkor Avani hotel has undergone a £5.5 million renovation and re-opened its doors in summer 2019.
With 80 beautifully decorated rooms, central pool, open plan lounging areas and lush tropical gardens, the hotel is a serene retreat, perfect for a relaxing in the Cambodian sunshine.
Its fantastic location in a quiet street in the centre of Siem Reap is close to pub street for evenings out, 20 minutes from the airport and a 15 minute drive from the famous Angkor Wat temple complex.

I loved the quirky retro touches like a type writer on the desk from which to create your holiday correspondences and the chic gowns and woven slippers, which I actually wore out and about in the day! They were so chic!

What to See and Do in Siem Reap

Angkor Wat of course, it’s probably the main reason you’re Cambodia! The ancient city and temple complex of Angkor Wat is the largest religious site in the world and it is literally a 15 minute drive from the hotel. The world famous temple complex built in  the 12th century as a Hindu temple, which later changed to a Buddhist temple is a truly magical and historic place to visit.
Keep scrolling to see my tips on how to get the best photos at the site.

Tips on how to photograph Angkor Wat

We left the hotel at 4am to photograph the sunrise over Angkor Wat. I would highly recommend the early start as even though the hotel is nearby, by the time you’ve driven to the site, queued, had your photo taken and registered (remember to take your passport and you must cover your shoulders and knees). Then driven from the main entrance to the temple itself, walked from the car park to the best photo spots, you arrive just in time for sunrise.
The sky is actually at its most beautiful and colourful around 10 minutes before the sun actually rises. So check on google what time the sun rises and make sure you’re in your spot at least 15 minutes before that so you can enjoy it in all of its splendid glory!
Try not to follow the crowd to the water, instead head to the temple out buildings to the left of the crowd to get a much more beautiful and interesting frame that you can be pictured in yourself, whilst staying away from the hoards of people. I haven’t edited the people out of the image below, as you can see it’s not too crowded, but it’s fairly impossible to get a completely clean shot.
Angkor wat avani hotel cambodia best sites to visit tomb raider film location photo tips
Once you’ve visited Angkor itself I highly recommend that you visit the Ta Prohm temple which is where Lara Croft Tomb Raider was filmed. (pictured below) It’s a much less busy temple and is way more magical.  You can wind your way through the crumbing walls and through decrepit arch ways and dark tunnels, it’s a great immersive experience.  The giant banyan trees whose roots have grown into the ancient temple walls provide an eerie and majestic back drop for you photos! I loved Ta Prohm temple!!

Where? Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
When? August 2018
Best time to go? Rio has a warm and temperate climate all year round. We visited in Brazil’s winter month of August, but despite the season we had some spectacularly hot weather, mixed in with cloudy days, so the best thing to do is take a range of layered clothing.

The Awesome View
So lets get straight to the point, the best thing about this hotel is breathtaking rooftop pool and the sweeping views of Copacabana Beach and the mountains in one direction and equally awesome view of the favelas, from the rear of the rooftop. The location of the hotel is on Avenue Atlantica, on Copacabana Beach, so you’re right in the middle of all the beach action.
Enjoy breakfast with a view, a midday swim in the warm sunshine or watch the golden sun set over Rio, with a caipirinha in hand lounging on the day beds.

Rio de Janeiro – What to Wear When You’re There

Brazil Trip – Part 2
Where? Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Why? In+Addition Pr took British press and bloggers on a press trip to Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais to introduce us to the world of Brazillian fashion. Rio de Janeiro is Brazil’s second largest city, famed for its lush natural landscape, incredible sandy beaches surrounded by mountains, rain forest and sea. Rio’s nightlife is legendary, the city plays host to the world famous Rio Carnival in February. The name Carioca is used to describe inhabitants of Rio.
Companions? Katrina and Luisa from In+Addition PR, Kristin Theclotheswhisperer.co.uk, Holly from Marie Claire, Naomi from Vogue and me TheStyleTraveller.com
A huge thanks to? The trip was in partnership with ABIT (The Brazilian Textile and Apparel Industry Association) and The Fasano Hotel Group
When to visit? Brazil is so vast that the weather really varies dependant on where you’re going. Rio has a sub tropical / equatorial climate, its warm all year round, making it an ideal holiday spot.

What to Wear When You’re There?

Rio de Janiero – Packing

When it comes to fashion, Rio is a city where anything goes. The sartorial style mirrors the laid back attitudes of the locals. One thing that’s bound to catch your eye on the beach is the infamous g-string bikini! Ladies don’t panic, you don’t have to wear one if you don’t want to, just leave it to the impossibly beautiful Cariocas! At night the atmosphere is much more chilled out here than in Sao Paulo, the look is trendy, young and cool, but just be a little cautious of wearing too many expensive designer pieces and jewellery.
Clockwise from left to right: Snakeskin bag – Jimmy Choo, Mascara – Dior, Hair oil treatment- Moroccan Oil, Fire and Ice lipstick – Dolce and Gabbana, Metallic beach bag – Asos, Blue bikini top – Violet Lake, Tie-dye jeans – Hudson Jeans, Red spike heels – Schutz.

Head from Santa Teresa over to the slightly more gritty area of Lapa. Amongst the hectic samba bars, live music scene and the bustle of daily life, a small oasis of colour and calm comes in the form of the Selaron steps. In 1990 a penniless artist (at the time) Selaron decided to lay tiles and mosaic a decrepit stair way outside his house. It’s still a work in progress with visitors from around the world coming to view and donate tiles from their homelands to add to the ever expanding art work.
Ipanema, Leblon and Copacabana
Hit the beach!!! You can’t come to Rio and not check out the world famous coast line. Whether you hang out with the beautiful people at Posto 9, the surfers nearer Copacabana or the Palace beach area which is the gay area, beach life plays a huge part in Cariocan culture. The shops, outdoor bars and restaurants which line the beach are super chic and the main street in Ipanema is a shoppers paradise. Head to lifestyle store Osklen, founded in Rio and aimed at young urban city/beach dwellers.

Rio – Partying and After Dark
Rio is known around the globe for its amazing nightlife. Whether you’re looking for slick bars and trendy clubs or something more authentically Brazillian, Rio can cater for all crowds.
For a chic experience head to Sushi Leblon for the best Japanese restaurant in town. To sample a real taste of Brazilian night life make a journey to the samba bar filled streets of Lapa.
Lapa night life
This 19th century warehouse is filled to the rafters with objet d’art and beautiful antiques, but at night it comes to life with live bands, samba music and crowds dancing till dawn. It gets really busy most nights of the week, try and book a table for dinner and get here around 9pm. Afterwards grab a Caipirinha at the bar and hang out on the balconies, watching the Lapa street party scene unfold around you.

If you visit in February DO NOT miss the carnival!

Where to stay in Rio de Janeiro – Brazil
We stayed at the ultra chic boutique hotel, The Fasano. As you can see from the modern rooftop pool with spectacular views over the beach and mountains, through to the elegant suites with glass walls looking out to sea, every aspect of this hotel is 100% ingrained in design. As a member of ‘The leading Hotels of the World’ group the food, staff and service are all impeccable too. The jazz bar on the ground floor is one of Rio’s coolest celeb hang outs. Thanks to Fasano Hotel and Copacabana Palace for images in this section.

This is one of my all time favourite hotels, not the usual type of hotel I tend to put on the site but I couldn’t do a post on Rio and not mention The Copacabana Palace. It’s the first hotel I ever stayed at in Brazil and also the first hotel I reviewed. Now almost 10 years later I still love it! This art deco landmark on Rio’s most famous beach simply oozes old school glamour, sophistication and style.
Bye bye Rio, until next time…
